Captain Perry Phillips
Captain Perry Phillips fell in love with the water as a toddler, swimming in his parent’s backyard pool and boating at his grandmother's cottage near Oshkosh, WI. In high school, his love of water continued on the swim team, spending his summer’s water skiing with friends, and once he realized it was possible to actually water ski behind a 18' Hobiecat, he became interested in sailing. He then learned to scuba dive; with that and his love of traveling took him to the Bahamas, Egypt, Guam, Bali and other warm water destinations.
Having spent so much time on the water, Perry obtained his Coast Guard license. He has since taught sailing on his local waters--Lake St. Croix and Lake Minnetonka. On Lake Superior, he has over 3,000 nautical miles logged sailing the Apostle Islands and Isle Royale, as well as the north shore of MN, and to Thunder Bay and Nipigon Bay at the north end of Lake Superior in Canada. He has also delivered sail boats from the Sault Ste Marie Locks to Bayfield.
After teaching for several years in the Caribbean, Perry decided to buy his own catamaran “Sun Spirit”, which he recently single-handed from St. Croix USVI to Tortola BVI, then sailed the boat from the British Virgin Islands to Alabama via Key West- a 1500 nautical mile journey.
Perry loves sharing the fun and challenges of sailing with others. He holds American Sailing Association Instructor ratings in Advanced Coastal Cruising, Cruising Catamaran, Bareboat Chartering, Basic Coastal Cruising, and Basic Keelboat. When he's not sailing, Perry lives in Hudson, WI.
